Shornemead Fort, Kent (692 748) was built as a result of the 1859 commission that stated that the 1795 work on the site needed updating. It is similar in size and shape to Coalhouse Fort but is a mirror image. During the 1950's, the Army School of Demolition destroyed the barracks, most of the open battery and the rear of the casemates during explosive practice. From the riverside the fort looks intact. However, as can be seen in the pictures, the rear of the fort is derilict. Despite this, it does give a good indication of construction and an idea of the thickness of these defences.
